Cindy from the Sewing Project:
\n<\/strong>Christmas is the most important celebration here with a church service, followed by lots of food, singing and lots of great fun. Sharing a meal with my family and extended family is my most favourite part. Reminiscing about the past and having great laughs while at the same time creating more valuable memories. Meeting and building relationships with new family members and strengthening existing relationships is another important part of Christmas celebration for me.<\/p>\n

Cindy du projet <\/strong>\u00ab<\/strong>Cours de couture<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0:
\n<\/strong>No\u00ebl est la f\u00eate la plus importante ici, avec un service religieux, suivi de beaucoup de nourriture, de chants et de beaucoup de plaisir. Partager un repas avec ma famille et ma famille \u00e9largie est ce que je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re le plus. Pour moi tous les deux sont importants\u00a0: Partager des souvenirs du pass\u00e9 et rire beaucoup ensemble et en m\u00eame temps cr\u00e9er de nouveaux souvenirs pr\u00e9cieux pour l\u2019avenir. Rencontrer les nouveaux membres de ma famille et renforcer les relations existantes est un autre aspect important de la f\u00eate de No\u00ebl pour moi.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Jenita, a pre-school teacher in the reading project:
\n<\/strong>At Christmas, sometimes people think it is about food or getting together, but I think the most important thing is to worship God for the birth of Jesus. We get up in the morning and eat together, and my husband shares with us from the Bible that this is a time to worship God. Then we have a service in the village to celebrate Jesus’ birth. We have games, food, and presents, but I think the most important thing is to worship God on that day for Jesus’ birth.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>A No\u00ebl, les gens pensent parfois qu’il s’agit de nourriture ou de rassemblement, mais je pense que le plus important est d’adorer Dieu pour la naissance de J\u00e9sus. Nous nous levons le matin, nous mangeons ensemble, et mon mari nous explique, en s’appuyant sur la Bible, que c’est le moment d’adorer Dieu. Ensuite, nous avons un service au village pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer la naissance de J\u00e9sus. Nous avons des jeux, de la nourriture et des cadeaux, mais je pense que le plus important est d’adorer Dieu ce jour-l\u00e0 pour la naissance de J\u00e9sus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Mercy Pakiwag is the head teacher in the Apu Palamguwan Cultural Education Center APC on the Philippine island of Mindanao. She is second from the left in the group of teachers under the poster in their main school building. \u00abKalandang\u00bb means \u00abPeace\u00bb.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>In the Philippines, Christians celebrate Christmas, remembering the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. It is the season where all Filipino people unite. Family reunions are very important as those abroad come home. As Pulangiyen we also celebrate Kaamulan<\/em>, a thanksgiving for the graces that we received du-ring the year. We have Panalangin<\/em>, thanksgiving for the harvest and many other celebrations. We join in Christmas Caroling, Simbang-Gabi<\/em>, advent vigil of 9 early evenings (for us) and of course Noche Buena <\/em>on the 24th <\/sup>of December. Cristina Gaerlan, the farm coordinator of the Philippine Institute of Women\u2019s Studies IWS writes about Filipino Christmas:
\n<\/strong>The Filipinas and Filipinos have a tradition of the \u00abSimbang Gabi novena<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> and \u00abPanunuluyan<\/em>\u00bb<\/em>, which are similar to the \u00abLas Posadas<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> in hispanic culture. \u00abSimbang Gabi<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> (translation: \u00abnight mass\u00bb) takes place in the late evening or early dawn of December16 to 24. The search for an inn where Mary and Joseph can stay is re-enacted before the actual mass on the last night of the novena. Christmas is a special, festive celebration for Filipinas and Filipinos, marked by several gatherings and much gift-giving. Often, many overseas workers come home for a break so they can celebrate Christmas with their families.<\/p>\n

Typical for filipino Christmas are the \u00abparols<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> and the \u00abbelen<\/em>\u00bb<\/em>,<\/em> the Christmas stars and the cribs. The belen (from \u201eBethlehem\u201d) remains a tradition in many homes in the Philippines. In the past, this used to be a simple tableau made from printed cardboard. Now it comes as stone, wood, glass, papier mach\u00e9 figurines. Our belen at the agroecological farm and retreat house is from the woodcarvers\u2019 village Asisan in Baguio. A typical set consists of the Holy Family, three kings, three shepherds and three sheep or lambs. But I thought three sheep is not enough. So I asked the vendor if he would sell me another three sheep, and he obliged. So, proudly, our belen has more sheep than the usual. I\u2019d have included other animals too, if others were available.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Tr\u00e8s typique pour No\u00ebl aux Philippines sont les \u00abparol<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> et les \u00abbelen<\/em>\u00bb<\/em>, les \u00e9toiles de No\u00ebl et les cr\u00e8ches. Au d\u00e9but, les \u00abbelen<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> (de Bethl\u00e9em) \u00e9taient des cr\u00e8ches dessin\u00e9es sur du carton. Aujourd’hui, ce sont souvent des cr\u00e8ches en pierre, en bois, en verre, en papier m\u00e2ch\u00e9. Une cr\u00e8che philippine traditionnelle comprend la Sainte Famille, trois rois, trois bergers et trois brebis. Notre cr\u00e8che dans la ferme agro-\u00e9cologique, o\u00f9 se d\u00e9roulent \u00e9galement des cours et des retraites, provient du village de sculpteurs sur bois Asisan \u00e0 Baguio. Elle a six brebis parce que seulement trois brebis me semblait trop peu. J’y ajouterais volontiers d’autres animaux, si j’avais pu les acheter.<\/p>\n
