Cindy from the Sewing Project:
\n<\/strong>Christmas is the most important celebration here with a church service, followed by lots of food, singing and lots of great fun. Sharing a meal with my family and extended family is my most favourite part. Reminiscing about the past and having great laughs while at the same time creating more valuable memories. Meeting and building relationships with new family members and strengthening existing relationships is another important part of Christmas celebration for me.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Natale \u00e8 la celebrazione pi\u00f9 importante qui, con un servizio in chiesa, seguito da tanto cibo, canti e tanto divertimento. Con-dividere un pasto con la mia famiglia e la mia famiglia allargata \u00e8 la parte che preferisco di pi\u00f9. Jenita, a pre-school teacher in the reading project:
\n<\/strong>At Christmas, sometimes people think it is about food or getting together, but I think the most important thing is to worship God for the birth of Jesus. We get up in the morning and eat together, and my husband shares with us from the Bible that this is a time to worship God. Then we have a service in the village to celebrate Jesus’ birth. We have games, food, and presents, but I think the most important thing is to worship God on that day for Jesus’ birth.<\/p>\n

Jenita, una maestra d’asilo del progetto con in libri:
\n<\/strong>A Natale, a volte la gente pensa che si tratti di cibo o di stare insieme, ma credo che la cosa pi\u00f9 importante sia adorare Dio per la nascita di Ges\u00f9. Ci alziamo la mattina e mangiamo insieme, e mio marito ci racconta dalla Bibbia che questo \u00e8 un momento per adorare Dio. Poi abbiamo un servizio nella chiesa del villaggio per celebrare la nascita di Ges\u00f9. Abbiamo giochi, cibo e regali, ma penso che la cosa pi\u00f9 importante sia adorare Dio in quel giorno per la nascita di Ges\u00f9.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\n<\/strong>In the Philippines, Christians celebrate Christmas, remembering the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. It is the season where all Filipino people unite. Family reunions are very important as those abroad come home. As Pulangiyen we also celebrate Kaamulan<\/em>, a thanksgiving for the graces that we received du-ring the year. We have Panalangin<\/em>, thanksgiving for the harvest and many other celebrations. We join in Christmas Caroling, Simbang-Gabi<\/em>, advent vigil of 9 early evenings (for us) and of course Noche Buena <\/em>on the 24th <\/sup>of December. \n<\/strong>Nelle Filippine i cristiani celebrano Natale, ricordando la nascita del nostro salvatore Ges\u00f9 Cristo. \u00c8 la stagione in cui tutti si uniscono. Le riunioni di famiglia sono molto importanti, persino quelli che lavorano all’estero tornano a casa. Come Pulangiyen celebriamo anche \u00abKaamulan\u00bb<\/em>, un ringraziamento molto colorito con danse e canti per i doni che abbiamo ricevuto durante l’anno. Abbiamo \u00abPanalangin\u00bb<\/em>, una celebrazione di ringraziamento per i nostri raccolti e molte altre celebrazioni. Ci uniamo al \u00abChristmas Caroling\u00bb<\/em>, ai canti natalizi da casa a casa con le nostre bellissime stelle fatte da materiali naturali. Cristina Gaerlan, the farm coordinator of the Philippine Institute of Women\u2019s Studies IWS writes about Filipino Christmas:
\n<\/strong>The Filipinas and Filipinos have a tradition of the \u00abSimbang Gabi novena<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> and \u00abPanunuluyan<\/em>\u00bb<\/em>, which are similar to the \u00abLas Posadas<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> in hispanic culture. \u00abSimbang Gabi<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> (translation: \u00abnight mass\u00bb) takes place in the late evening or early dawn of December16 to 24. The search for an inn where Mary and Joseph can stay is re-enacted before the actual mass on the last night of the novena. Christmas is a special, festive celebration for Filipinas and Filipinos, marked by several gatherings and much gift-giving. Often, many overseas workers come home for a break so they can celebrate Christmas with their families.<\/p>\n

Typical for filipino Christmas are the \u00abparols<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> and the \u00abbelen<\/em>\u00bb<\/em>,<\/em> the Christmas stars and the cribs. The belen (from \u201eBethlehem\u201d) remains a tradition in many homes in the Philippines. In the past, this used to be a simple tableau made from printed cardboard. Now it comes as stone, wood, glass, papier mach\u00e9 figurines. Our belen at the agroecological farm and retreat house is from the woodcarvers\u2019 village Asisan in Baguio. A typical set consists of the Holy Family, three kings, three shepherds and three sheep or lambs. But I thought three sheep is not enough. So I asked the vendor if he would sell me another three sheep, and he obliged. So, proudly, our belen has more sheep than the usual. I\u2019d have included other animals too, if others were available.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\n<\/strong>Le filippine e i filippini hanno una tradizione della \u00abSimbang Gabi novena<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> e \u00abPanunuluyan<\/em>\u00bb<\/em>, che sono simili alle \u00abLas Posadas<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> nella cultura ispanica medievale. \u00abSimbang Gabi<\/em>\u00bb<\/em> (traduzione: \u00abmessa notturna\u00bb) si svolge in tarda serata o all’alba del 16 al 24 dicembre. La ricerca di una locanda dove Maria e Giuseppe possano alloggiare viene riproposta prima della messa vera e propria dell’ultima notte della novena. Un presepe tradizionale filippino comprende la Sacra Famiglia, tre re, tre pastori e tre pecore. Il nostro presepe nella fattoria agro-ecologica, dove si svolgono anche corsi e ritiri, proviene dal villaggio di intagliatori del legno Asisan a Baguio. Lei ha sei pecore perch\u00e9 tre mi parevano troppo poche. Aggiunterei volentieri altri animali se avessi potuto comprarli.<\/p>\n
